Taiwan-Japan Joint Release of the Sky Lantern Deepens the Friendly Relationship through Tourism Exchange
[New Taipei City] “2017 New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival” activity at the Shifen Square grandly kicked off today (the 11th). Many friends worldwide arrived to the site and stood in a line receive coupons for releasing sky lanterns. With a short time about 50 minutes, all the 1,200 coupons for releasing the sky lanterns were given away. On the Lantern Festival that symbolizes reunion and happiness, the Mayor of New Taipei City Eric Chu Li-lun, the Representative of the charitable foundation Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Numata Mikio who joined the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival for the first time and three Deputy Mayors of New Taipei City jointly made the release. The large main lantern completed by the cooperation of more than a hundred children aged 6~12 from the New Taipei City Pingxi District Shifen Elementary School and the Taipei City Japanese School highlights the top 10 most popular tourist's attractions in New Taipei City and Japan. The children from Taiwan and Japan participating on site were invited to stand hand in hand for a fun experience of releasing the sky lanterns.
The Mayor of New Taipei City Eric Chu Li-lun indicated that it's the 19th year of the New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, which has made the Pingxi area, once a quiet and simple small town, transform into a tourist's attraction that has won international popularity. Every year, countless visitors from home and abroad are attracted to visit the town, which has won international recommendations and recognitions. According to the latest statistic data of 2016 released by the Tourism Bureau of Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), for the first time, Pingxi has been swiftly promoted to the Top 10 Most Favorite Tourist's Attractions in Taiwan for free individual travelers or backpack travelers. The same year, the National Geographic Magazine recommended Pingxi as one of the “World's Top 10 Best Winter Trips”, which proves Pingxi's popularity in the world and its unique glamor of tourism. With the constant growth of the number of international visitors travelling in Taiwan, Pingxi has turned out to be the must-go popular attraction whenever visiting Taiwan. There are tourists from different countries travelling everywhere in Pingxi all year round, so as to promote the visibility of New Taipei City in the world.
Today's activity highlight- the 20 feet tall main lantern symbolizing the concept of Taiwan-Japan exchange and depicting the areas of New Taipei City including Yeliu, Jiufen, Tamsui, Welai, Jinguashi, Yingge and etc. to show the distinctive mountain town, waterfall, museum, aboriginal totems and the beautiful scene of the sky lanterns soaring into the sky. Concurrently, the Taiwanese people’s favorite popular attractions in Japan are presented, such as Mount Fuji, Osaka Castle, Sky Tree, Sensoji Temple and etc. All of them are the top 10 must-gos and must-visits popular attractions! Through the main lantern, which is painting by the cooperation of the children from Taiwan and Japan, the tourism travels make the friendly relationship between Taiwan and Japan closer as well as create more possibilities and sustainability of extended relationship between Taiwan and Japan.

With the transformation of the Pingxi Lantern Festival, Pingxi local business circle, society clubs, associations and etc. have actively invested resources to promote local tourism and self-held activities, such as the seasonal exclusive activities like the Knocking Bell Hide and Seek and the Useful Sky Lantern. On February 19 (Sunday) and February 25 (Saturday), the famous nature observer- Teacher Liu Ke-xiang and the researcher of Pingxi literary history Guo Cong-neng are invited to lead everyone to a mountain-cleaning activity for an experience the beauty of nature and humanism in Pingxi.
