Houtong Cat Village Tour Video
Houtong Cat Village was named by CNN in their article "6 places where cats outshine tourist attractions" in 2013. In the early days, Houtong was known for its monkeys and coal mine. More recently, Houtong gained popularity because a cat lover on the internet initiated a volunteer group to improve the living conditions of the village and to give the cats a more friendly environment. With the spread of the internet, this activity gained popularity, making the place famous among cat lovers. In order to promote proper knowledge in feeding and caring for cats, the New Taipei City government made use of idle spaces and specially transformed the old accommodation of Taiwan Railway into an information station for cats which was opened in November 2014.
